Why Choose Us

Somewhere in the last few years, you stopped believing your life added up to much. Nothing dramatic happened. You still work. You still show up. But the question sits there, and in an ordinary adult life there is nowhere to put it.

Not your spouse — they would worry. Not your best friend, because it sounds indulgent. Not a therapist, trained to look for a condition. Not the internet, which sells you a crystal or a four-thousand-dollar course.

So it stays where it is. And the years keep moving.

Dr. Bernice Sykes is a spiritual life coach in Reno, Nevada, working with adults across Washoe County and beyond. Spiritual coaching here is the place that question finally goes — and then the work of doing something with the answer.

What People Try Before Spiritual Life Coaching

Almost nobody books a spiritual life coach first. They arrive fourth or fifth, after the obvious options are closed.

Talking to family and friends

Your spouse. Your oldest friend. The trouble is that they love you, so they reassure you. You're just tired. It's been a big year. Reassurance is kind, and it ends the conversation. You raise it once over dinner in Midtown and never raise it again.
What spiritual coaching does instead: nobody reassures you. One-to-one spiritual life coaching exists to ask the second question, then the third, until you have actually said the thing.

Asking clergy or a faith leader

Your pastor, priest, rabbi or imam already holds an answer — their tradition's. If that is where you want to land, this is the right door. It closes when the question is the tradition. Deconstruction — questioning a faith you were raised in — has no home inside the building you are questioning.
What spiritual coaching does instead: spiritual direction and mentoring, which does not need you to arrive anywhere in particular. Bernice will not argue you back in or cheer you further out.

Booking a therapist for a spiritual question

A therapist finds a condition and treats it. Bernice refers Reno clients into therapy most weeks. But with no condition, a clinical hour has nowhere to go. Billing often needs something named first, so a question about meaning quietly becomes a diagnosis about mood.
What spiritual coaching does instead: the question stays a question. Nothing gets named, nothing gets coded, nothing follows you around Washoe County afterwards.

Searching online for a spiritual coach

You get two results. A Reddit thread calling the whole field a pyramid scheme — fair, because parts of the industry really do run as an MLM. Or a beautiful programme selling an awakening in twelve weeks for more than your car payment.
What spiritual coaching does instead: a published price, a real credential, and a free first call. You judge the coaching, not the marketing around it.

What Does a Spiritual Life Coach Do?

A spiritual life coach works on the part of your life that has no symptoms. Not anxiety. Not grief you can name. Nothing a doctor would write down. Just the quieter question underneath: what is all this for, and am I living like I believe it?

That question is far more common than the silence around it suggests. Pew Research Center’s 2023–24 Religious Landscape Study found that 74% of US adults call themselves very or somewhat spiritual — 32% very, 42% somewhat. Another 21% say they are “spiritual but not religious.” Three-quarters of the country carries an inner life. Almost nobody has anywhere to take it.

So spiritual life coaching is not mystical, and it is not therapy. It is structural. You get a regular hour with someone whose only job is that question. You get a framework for making decisions, a practice you will actually keep, and someone who notices when you contradict yourself.

What comes out of it is clarity — knowing what you think, which is rarer than it sounds. Some people call the role a spiritual advisor. Others say spiritual mentor, or spiritual direction. The label matters much less than whether the hour exists at all.

Where to start: Dr, Sykes offers one-to-one spiritual life coaching, beginning with a free call that costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Spiritual Life Coaching Services in Reno, NV

Nine spiritual coaching tracks, all online, from Reno across Sparks, Carson City, Washoe County and well beyond Nevada. Most people start in one and move between them as the question changes shape.

Soul Alignment Coaching

One-to-One Spiritual Life Coaching

Private video sessions built around your questions, not a curriculum. Where most Reno clients start — especially when the thing that needs saying has never been said to anyone.

Energy & Chakra Healing Coaching.

Spiritual Direction and Mentoring

The slower form of spiritual coaching. Less goal-setting, more company over months, in the older tradition of spiritual direction. Good for people inside a faith who want a mentor rather than a programme.

Spiritual Life Coaching for Seekers & Beginners.

Spiritual Awakening Support

For people mid-shift who privately think they are losing their grip. You are not. Something is reorganising, it is disorienting, and steady company is the difference between an awakening and eighteen confusing months.

Spiritual Growth & Awakening Coaching.

Purpose and Meaning Coaching

For high achievers who arrived and felt nothing. You work on calling, values, and what the next decade should answer to. Not another goal that lands the way the last one did.

Intuition & Inner Wisdom Coaching.

Spiritual Coaching Through Grief and Loss

Bereavement breaks meaning before it breaks anything else. This track integrates what happened instead of explaining it away, at whatever pace the first year takes. Grief support in Reno thins out fast once the funeral is over.

Relationship & Soul Connection Coaching.

Spiritual Coaching for Life Transitions

Retirement. The empty nest. A divorce. A diagnosis. A move to Reno where you know nobody yet. Transitions pull down the structures that quietly carried your sense of purpose. This rebuilds them on purpose.

Relationship & Soul Connection Coaching.

Spiritual Burnout and Reconnection

For people emptied out by their own practice, ministry or caregiving — common across Northern Nevada. Spiritual dryness is depletion, not a failure of faith. So recovery comes first and practice comes second.

Relationship & Soul Connection Coaching.

Intuition and Discernment Coaching

For anyone stuck between two good options, reading endlessly and deciding nothing. You learn a discernment framework — a repeatable way to choose — and rebuild enough self-trust to act on your own read.

Relationship & Soul Connection Coaching.

Spiritual Coaching for Veterans and Service Members

For people who came home to Reno, or anywhere, and found the meaning did not come with them. Deployment, reintegration, moral injury, and the loss of a purpose the institution used to supply. Dr. Sykes served nine years in the US Army. She does not need this explained to her.

What Is Spiritual Life Coaching

What Clients Bring to Spiritual Life Coaching

These are the sentences clients open with, roughly as they say them. If one is close to yours, the spiritual coaching track beside it is where that conversation goes.

I got everything I said I wanted and I feel almost nothing.

The promotion. The house. The degree. Years of work, and the feeling you were promised never showed up. That flatness — disillusionment — is almost impossible to explain to anyone still climbing.

Purpose and Meaning Coaching. Viktor Frankl made the same point in 1946 when he founded logotherapy, his school of meaning-centred therapy: meaning drives people, not achievement. That is why more achievement never fixes this.

The community went. The calendar went. The language went. Nobody warns you how much structure walks out with the belief.

Spiritual direction and mentoring — rebuilding something you can stand on, at a pace that is honest.

The things people say to help make it worse, not better.

The grief and loss track, working on meaning-making: fitting what happened into your life instead of forcing it to make sense. Acceptance is not the same as giving up. The gap between those two is where equanimity lives — holding something hard without it running you.

Contemplation has turned into maintenance. You keep going because stopping would mean something.

Spiritual burnout and reconnection. The work starts with what is draining you, because spiritual dryness is nearly always depletion rather than failure.

Seventh podcast. Fourth book. You know more about the decision than anyone you know, and you are no closer to it. Research is often avoidance in a respectable coat.

Intuition and discernment coaching gives you a structure. A decision made without certainty is still one you can defend to yourself in six months.

You are almost certainly not.

Spiritual awakening support exists for exactly this window — when the old framework has loosened and nothing has replaced it yet. The ambivalence of half-believing is its own kind of tiring.

Thirty years of identity arrived with a job title and left with it. Reno and Sparks are full of people in this exact position.

The life transitions track, rebuilding purpose out of values instead of a role — before the drift sets in properly.

The mission gave you structure, belonging and a moral framework. Then it stopped. For some people there is moral injury alongside it — having done, or failed to do, something against your own code.

The veterans track. This is Bernice’s own ground.

Some of this belongs with a clinician, not a spiritual coach. If Bernice hears that on the first call, she will say so and point you toward the right person in Reno or wherever you are.

How Long Have You Felt Spiritually Disconnected?

Spiritual disconnection is the one problem in adult life with no deadline attached.

A broken arm gets seen the same day. A failing marriage forces a conversation inside a year. This has no such trigger — nothing escalates, nobody notices, and it never becomes urgent enough to act on.

Six months feels like a phase. Two years feels like circumstances. Ten years is a decade spent waiting for it to clear by itself — and Bernice has had that conversation with Reno clients counting in decades. What arrives instead is existential fatigue: you stop asking the question.

How Dr. Sykes solves this: she becomes the deadline. In the Army, spiritual fitness was timetabled and trained, not something you reached when you felt like it. She brings that frame to her spiritual direction and mentoring track. You write a rule of life together. Then she keeps the standing appointment that makes you hold to it, so reverence and steadiness rebuild on a schedule rather than on mood.

Spiritual Coaching Practices You'll Learn

Seven practices, taught in order, worked on between sessions. No mysticism. Nothing you have to believe before you start.

Values clarification

Naming what you hold now, apart from what you were handed at twenty. Most people have never written it down. The gap between the written list and the actual calendar is where the work starts.

Practice design

Building something you can sustain instead of something you admire. Ten minutes you keep beats an hour you drop by March. The target is congruence — your calendar matching what you say you believe.

Contemplative practice

Meditation, prayer, or silence. Whichever fits what you believe. Bernice teaches the form, not the doctrine, and it works whether or not you are addressing anyone. What it builds is grounding: staying steady when things around you are not.

The discernment framework

A structured way to decide when you will never have all the information. You will not get certainty. You will get a choice you can still stand behind when it turns out imperfectly.

Meaning-making

Fitting what happened into your life rather than explaining it. This is the practice that carries loss, and it moves slower than the rest.

Gratitude practice

A trained habit of noticing, with the reasoning spelled out rather than assumed. Gratitude practice is attention work, not positive thinking. It is the one people most reliably get wrong.

Reflection and review

A short weekly examen — an old practice of reading your week back. Notice where you were most yourself and least yourself, then adjust. The dull habit that makes the other six hold. Together these become what the old traditions call a rule of life: a written promise about how you will actually live. Perspective stops being a mood and starts being something in the diary.

How you learn them: inside one-to-one spiritual life coaching, or the slower spiritual direction track if you would rather not work to a plan

Is Spiritual Life Coaching Legitimate?

You searched it. So let me answer it properly instead of defensively.

Yes, spiritual coaching is unregulated. Start there.

Anyone can call themselves a spiritual life coach. Nobody checks. There is no qualification that means anything, and no body to complain to. That is true, it is exactly why the suspicion exists, and a page that skipped past it would be proving the point.

How to check any spiritual coach, including this one

Five things separate a real spiritual coach from a programme seller.

  • One: training you can look up yourself.
  • Two: a price stated before any call, not after a friendly conversation.
  • Three: a clear policy for when it is not working.
  • Four: willingness to tell you no.
  • Five: no upsell — nothing to recruit you into, no tier above the one you bought, nothing to sell on to anyone else.

Bernice’s answers, in order. A PhD in Holistic Life Coaching. The price is below. [[CLIENT: fit policy]] She refers people to therapists most weeks. And there is no ladder, nothing to qualify you into, nothing downstream.

The research behind spiritual fitness is real

In 2013 the RAND Corporation, commissioned by the United States Air Force, published Spiritual Fitness and Resilience (RR-100-AF). Reviewing the evidence, Douglas Yeung and Margret T. Martin concluded that “being spiritually fit can influence resilience and well-being by buffering stress.”

They broke it into four things you can measure. A spiritual worldview. Personal religious or spiritual practices. Support from a spiritual community. And spiritual coping — how you use belief to get through hard things.

Note the third one. Belonging can be measured, which is why isolation shows up in this work so often. RAND also found that “possessing a sense of meaning and purpose in life is strongly positively related to quality of life and improved health and functioning.”

That is the US military treating spiritual fitness as trainable, not private. Bernice spent nine years inside that institution before the doctorate. It is where this approach comes from.

What spiritual coaching is not

Not therapy — nothing is treated, and Bernice is not a counsellor or clinician. Not religious instruction — you keep your own beliefs. Not chaplaincy, which belongs to an institution. Not psychic work: no predictions, no readings, no contact with anyone who has died. And not a guru arrangement. The aim is that you need her less each month, not more.

Test it cheaply: the first spiritual coaching call is free, and you will get an honest read on fit at the end of it.

What Spiritual Life Coaching Costs in Reno

Almost nobody in this field publishes a price. That is not an oversight. It is a technique, and it is the most common complaint about the industry.

So here it is. $60 to 200 per session (it varries case to case)

For context, the directories covering Reno and Sparks put a typical rate across Northern Nevada at around $204 per session. Place that number yourself rather than taking anyone’s word for it.

The first call is free and carries no obligation. It is not a first session and it is not a pitch. Bernice asks what is going on, how long it has been going on, and what you have already tried. You leave with an honest read on fit — including when the read is that spiritual coaching is not what you need.

If it stops working, say so. [[CLIENT: fit or refund policy — check three of the five above, and the section is weaker without it]]

Insurance does not cover spiritual coaching, which suits most clients. Nothing has to be named as a disorder before you are allowed to think about your own life. And no third party decides when you are finished.

About Dr. Bernice Sykes, Spiritual Life Coach

Bernice Sykes holds a PhD in Holistic Life Coaching. That training treats a person as a whole system rather than a problem to solve. It is why her spiritual coaching reaches into rhythm, workload, grief and belonging instead of stopping at meditation instructions.

Before coaching she served nine years in the US Army, from 1995 to 2004. That shapes the method more than it sounds. The military is one of very few institutions in American life that treats spiritual resilience as trainable and measurable, not private. The RAND study above exists because the Air Force paid for it. Bernice worked inside that assumption for most of a decade.

She works with adults across Reno, Sparks and Washoe County, and more and more from outside Nevada. Most arrive having told nobody they were looking. Usually after months of deciding whether this even counts as a real problem.

It counts. You will find her direct, hard to shock, and completely uninterested in telling you what to believe. Doc Bunny’s Ki Builder is built on one idea: ki — your working energy — is something you tend, not something that happens to you.

Work with her: any of the nine spiritual coaching tracks above, starting with a free call.

When Spiritual Life Coaching Is the Wrong Choice

Negative qualification, because it saves us both a call.

You need someone in the room. Every session is online. If face-to-face is non-negotiable, a Reno practice is the better route and worth the search.

You are in crisis. If you are at risk of harming yourself or anyone else, spiritual coaching is the wrong tool and the right help is immediate. Please contact emergency services or a crisis line now.

You want a reading. No predictions, no mediumship, no contact with the dead. That is a different profession and Bernice does not practise it.

You want to be told what to believe. She will not. And she would rather say that now than take your money and disappoint you in week three.

Everyone else is exactly who spiritual life coaching is built for:

  • High achievers who arrived and felt nothing
  • People deconstructing a faith, or quietly returning to one
  • The recently bereaved, when meaning breaks before anything else does
  • People mid-transition — retirement, the empty nest, a divorce, a move to Reno
  • Veterans and service members carrying moral injury or no sense of purpose
  • Caregivers emptied out by looking after everyone else
  • Seekers with real curiosity and no map
  • Faith-practising clients who want a spiritual coach that will not undermine their tradition
  • The 21% who call themselves spiritual but not religious

If you are on that list: book the free call and find out in one conversation.

Spiritual Life Coaching in Reno, Sparks and Northern Nevada

Reno is full of people who moved here to start something over. Californians. Retirees. Service families. People one divorce or one bankruptcy into a second attempt. A city with that much reinvention produces a lot of unasked questions and very few places to ask them.

All sessions are online sessions. In practice that means no drive and no waiting room. In a city this size, it also means no chance of running into someone from work on the way in.

Clients join from across Reno — Midtown, South Reno, Northwest Reno and Somersett — and from Sparks, Carson City, Fernley, Incline Village and the Lake Tahoe basin. Anywhere in the Truckee Meadows works, because nobody is travelling. Across Northern Nevada, the drive is usually what turns a decision into a postponement. In Washoe County that can be forty minutes each way.

Because spiritual life coaching here is online, it is not limited to Nevada either. Clients join from other states in their own time zones. Evening slots exist for people who cannot take an afternoon out of a working day.

Book from anywhere: the free call runs on video, same as every session.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spiritual Life Coaching

How much does a spiritual life coach cost?

Directories covering Reno put a typical local rate at around $204 per session. The first call is free, and the price sits on this page rather than arriving after a conversation designed to make it harder to say no.

A spiritual life coach gives that question the hour it has nowhere else to go. Then you turn it into something workable: values clarification, a practice you will keep, a discernment framework for decisions, and meaning-making after loss.

No, and it is better to know that now. Spiritual coaching is unregulated and anyone can use the title. What you can check is training, a published price, a stated fit policy, and whether anything is being sold on. All four are answered above.
A therapist treats a condition and works backwards into its cause. A spiritual life coach works forwards on what you believe and what you do about it. Neither replaces the other, and they often run side by side.
For journalling prompts and untangling your thoughts at midnight, genuinely yes. It is useful and free. What it cannot do is notice what you are avoiding, or remember that you said the opposite three weeks ago. It also cannot tell you something you do not want to hear and still be there next Tuesday.
No. Reno clients here include practising Christians, people who left a tradition, and people who never had one. Bernice teaches the form of a practice, not the content of a belief.
Yes. Because every session is online, spiritual coaching here is not limited to Reno or Washoe County. Clients join from other states in their own time zones.
Realistically: values and practice work start producing something inside a month. Meaning-making after a big loss takes far longer, often a year. Anyone promising faster is selling you something.
